Suggestions on what birdhouse to build?

I finally got myself a table saw, have access to a mitre saw and would really like to be able to make a birdhouse.  Mostly for fun and for the sake of experimentation, but putting my efforts to good use is a definite plus!

So.  I’ve found some plans on for different types of birdhouses, but I cannot decide what bird to build it for.

It should be simple, so I don’t get in over my head.

    These look very straight-forward.

    Any suggestions?

    I live in upstate/western NY.

PS: I'm slightly torn in that on the one hand, I want to provide shelter for a less commmon bird, but at the same time, I'd rather not see the house go unused.

Not quite a bird, but how about a bat house? Those little guys eat bugs, and since summer is coming up, it might work pretty well.

I remember you have like this bag bait thing with a gazillion bugs in it. So darn gross. :barf: Also if skeeters are a problem, these little mammals eat them too.

AND they are easy to make. Just nail 'em to on of your large pines. :o)

I was looking at bestnest.com this weekend for bat houses after we sat out friday night watching the bats circling the front of the house. I'll be getting one soon. I'd try to build one but I am terrible at any form of carpentry.
Gil - that birdhouse design looks good. I have 2 like that in bluebird size and this season I have chickadees in one and bluebirds in the other.

I bought 6 of them yesterday for $3 a piece from someone's front yard. Nothing fancy, just going to stick them in a few random trees behind the house.

not yet, but thanks for the reminder :)
I might not get them now, I found birdhouses for $3 a piece up the road and bought 6 more of them. I now have 14 boxes behind the house.
